Marbled Earrings

Combine resin and cardstock for quick and easy earrings.

earrings

Combine cardstock and resin to make a pair of fabulous earrings. I have created a free printable inchie sheet of marbled circular designs for crafting. The first project I made using them was this pair of earrings. You-V resin, a quick-drying resin, made this project quick and easy.

papers and punch

I punched out circles using a 1″ paper punch using the printable and solid cardstock. Gluing the blue and the marbled circles together helped add thickness and a bit of weight to the earrings. Resin covers both sides of the glued circles.

Drilling small holes into the resined papers was done to add the ear wires. See the entire video below for the complete tutorial and tips.

Ink Blending Brushes

A review of a set of ink blending brushes found on Amazon.

brushes

Ink blending brushes are a great tool to have in your crafting arsenal. I wonder if it matters to the brand if they work well? To date, I have been using cosmetic brushes. I recently found this affordable set on Amazon. It includes 5 color-coded brushes and a stand.

close-up

The brushes appeared to be similar to the cosmetic brush I had been using. The size and construction were the same. The difference is the color of the handle and the color of the bristles. The brush head did seem to be a bit more compact but I can’t completely consider that as a difference due to the possibility of the use of my brush causing the difference.

This set is the basic colored set but there is also a dark color set available.

necklace

This wrinkle technique creates great results. I first tried it with regular stamp pads and was inspired by not wanting to throw away my used protective paper from sublimation. You can read about that here. [wrinkle technique] Immediately after doing so, I thought why not use the new sublimation ink pads from Artesprix for this technique? So here it is applied to a

Retro Christmas Tree

Make a 3D paper Christmas tree with this free SVG file.

with CutCardStock

finished tree

I thought it would be fun to create something for Christmas in July, so I made this retro-looking Christmas Tree. Because there is no glue needed, you can create it now and store it flat to use later. How fun would it be to wrap it in little twinkle lights or place fun objects on the shelf-like sections? You could make it in a different color to suit your decor.

paper

To make the tree I used Bonsai-colored cardstock in 8.5 x 11. I needed to use three sheets for the tree.

Cutting this file on a Cricut Maker, I set it to cut 100# cardstock and it was quick and easy to cut through.

cut pieces

As mentioned, the file is designed to fit on three sheets of 8.5 x 11″ paper. There are two triangles and five circles that vary in size.

How to Weave a Paper Vase

Weave a paper vase with this free SVG file.

with CutCardStock

finished vase with flowers

This month Pop-Tone is the featured cardstock over at CutCardStock. I’ve created a decorative piece that is 3-dimensional. The above is shown in two coordinating colors but it works equally well in one color. Such a cute finished piece that is great for gift-giving, decorating a small space, or sharing as a group craft project with others.

cardstock colors used

I used two colors from the Pop-Tone sample pack, Gumdrop Green, and Sour Apple. These are 65# card stock. Each Pop-Tone sample pack comes with one sheet of all the colors in the 65 lb cover weight and has one sheet of each of the Pop-Tone 100 lb cover weight. This is a nice way to sample all the colors. Of course, you can purchase the colors separately.

cricut maker

I cut the design on a Cricut Maker. Before cutting, I scaled the design to fit onto a letter-size sheet, then I set my file to cut 1 of each of the two colors. The cutting pressure was set to 100# cardstock with no additional pressure.

cut pieces

To begin weaving, flip one of the colors so the angled “rays” are in the opposite direction from the other piece, and then stack them on top of each other.

weaving

I used binder clips to hold the weaving in place to make sure the results were correct before gluing it all together.

with Gwen Studios

This month the Gwen Studios design team is working with curling ribbon. Curling ribbons can be used in a variety of different ways. Quilling paper is very similar to curling ribbon so I thought it would work in a similar way. I chose to roll the ribbons into disks and make earrings.

I would like to thank Gwen Studios for providing me with the ribbon to work with. Designer Crafts Connection will share links to all the projects made for this month’s nautical theme design team projects.

ribbon and quilling paper

The photo above shows the difference in size between the curling ribbon on the left and the quilling paper on the right. The ribbon is just about twice the width but comes in a really long length that you can cut to your desired size.

rolling the ribbon

Using a battery-operated quilling tool, made the rolling of the ribbon quick and easy. The ribbon naturally curls in one direction, following that direction makes the rolling of the ribbon a bit easier to work with. Use tacky glue to add different colors to the rolling.

To secure the ribbon, I added a piece of cardstock onto the back of the curled ribbon in a coordinating color. To see the entire process, watch the video tutorial below:

Video Tutorial:

I made two different pairs of earrings using the same curling technique. The blue pair are stud earrings while the pink version is made using ear wires.

DIY a Travel Valet Tray

Make your own travel valet tray that can be used for so much more.

finished travel valet

Have you ever seen a travel valet? They are basically a basket or tray if you will that you use to collect all your pocket items when traveling. This is a quick and easy-to-make version using a placemat from the Dollar Tree and a Snap Kit from Gwen Studios.

snap kit

The Gwen Studios Snap Kit is available at Walmart. On top of it is a cut-down piece of a woven plastic placemat from the Dollar Tree.

parts needed

From the kit, you’ll need the tool with the appropriate parts installed for the snaps you are using and the snaps. An instruction sheet is included in the kit to guide you on the use of the different snaps. You can see 8 stars and 4 of each male and female parts in the above photo.

snaps in place

tool

Place the tool on the snaps and squeeze tight to secure them in place. It really is easy to use.

The finished travel valet is flat on the left and snapped together on the right. It is really handy for so much more than travel. The valet can withstand getting wet, making it work well in the bathroom or kitchen because it is plastic.

DIY Butterfly Earrings

Learn how to make butterfly earrings with shrink film and UV Resin.

final earrings

I was so happy with the result of these DIY Butterfly Earrings. When my daughters saw them they requested pairs be made for them too, so I knew I had stumbled upon something good.

stamped image

I began with a stamped image on Grafix shrink art film in white. StazOn ink is great for this process because it is made for every surface and stamps a rich dark black.

cut out film

After stamping the image and allowing the ink to dry, I cut out the butterflies with a small detail scissor.

colored in

Coloring the butterfly with water-based markers was a bit of a challenge on plastic but I have a few tips in the video tutorial to make it work.

size difference

See the size difference between the stamped image and after the film has been shrunk. I used a heat gun to shrink the film, a dedicated toaster oven also works well.

I colored the edge and the back of the butterfly with a permanent black marker. Then I coated the back with matte UV resin and the front with jewelry resin both from You-V. The cool thing about You-V resin is that it is a quick cure resin, less than a minute under a UV flashlight.

You can see the gloss of the resin on the butterfly now. Drilling a hole into the top of the wing prepares the piece for the jewelry findings.

How to Foil Chipboard

Learn how to apply foil to chipboard for a colorful result.

final card front

What a fun way to upscale chipboard using foil. This chipboard was purchased at the Dollar Tree but any chipboard pieces will work. There are different ways to get texture with the foil based on how you apply the transfer gel. After foiling, I used the chipboard on the front of a card and added additional color and texture with cardstock pieces.

Applying Transfer Gel on chipboard can be done in a variety of ways. Using my finger to apply it gave a very nice texture to the surface when the foil was applied. You can see the entire transfer process and card making in the video tutorial below.

Video Tutorial:

close-up of texture

The close-up image shows the texture detail from the foil on the chipboard. This version is the one with less foil applied as seen in the video tutorial. The brushstroke-like effect is very nice in person, while the overall color shimmers with movement.

final card

What a beautiful card that could be used for a wedding, an anniversary, or just a special greeting. You can add your own sentiment or leave it as is. I love how the neutral colors coordinate together. Three different papers were used to make this card.

The papers used were Stardream Metallic in Quartz for the card. Stardream is my favorite cardstock because it has a shimmer to the surface. Cut the floral element from MirriSparkle Glitter in Gold, and the vellum insert from Curious Translucent in Clear.

cricut

I cut the file on a Cricut Maker. As a reminder, set the red lines to score and load your scoring tool before setting the file to cut. Similar weight cardstocks can be cut at the same time. Set your machine to 100lb cardstock for the Stardream and the Gold Glitter and run the cut twice. Just push the go button again without removing your mat.

parts

The cut file has three parts to glue together. Any adhesive will work, I am using Reptile Craft Adhesive. I’ve placed it into a smaller bottle (as seen in the photo above). You can purchase the pearl gems at the Dollar Tree.
