DIY Ribbon Fish

with Gwen Studios

final fish

Using carboard and ribbons, you can make this fun colorful fish for Father’s Day. Whether Dad is a fisherman or not, he will get a kick out of this colorful fish that the kids can help make.

template and box

Grab the free PDF template below. I used it to cut out cardboard from a cereal box.

fish cut and paint

After cutting the cardboard, I used DecoArt’s DecoEarth paints on the fish. I applied the paint with a brush and then smooshed it to blend with a makeup sponge.

painted

Paint the head, the tail, and the fins. This would be a fun job for the littlest crafter to help with.

ribbons

I cut a variety of colored Gwen Studios ribbons around 3″ in length. I used satin ribbons that were 3/8″ wide.

fold

Using a hot glue gun, I folded the ribbons to a point. You can do this while the paint is drying on the fish.

first row of ribbons

Start at the tail end of the fish and add the folded ribbons as shown above. I used hot glue to quickly put them in place.

ribbons all in place

Randomly choose the colors of ribbon and continue to place the folded ribbons onto the fish. Once you are past the fins, you will not need any more ribbons.

folded ribbons

This is a close-up of the folded ribbons all glued in place. You can see how the points of the ribbons are staggered. Then glue the head onto the fish’s body, it is slightly bigger. If you align the sides, the head part will curve up and over the ribbons.

I used a round resin piece I had for the eye. I think a googly eye would work well.

Bunny Napkin Ring

Make bunny napkin rings for you Easter table to add color and a bit of fun. #free #SVG

Do you need last-minute decor for your Easter table? These bunny napkin rings might be just what you need. They are quick and easy to make and will add color to your table. You can craft them by cutting them out on your personal cutting machine or print out the template and cut them out with a pair of scissors. If you are short on time, get the kids involved and let them help cut out the shapes. They will be so proud of their accomplishment and their addition to the Easter table.

There are two different bunny napkin rings in the files. The first one is in the photograph above. If you want the bunny head turned 90 degrees to align with the length of the napkin, that is included too.

After cutting out your paper shape, wrap the paper around your napkin and secure with a little tape.

Heart Boxes

This is an example of the sixty some odd heart boxes we made for Valentine’s Day. Who were the lucky recipients? Kids in my daughters’ classes and their basketball teammates. What was inside? Those famous lip balm balls everyone is talking about, a mustache whistle and a valentine gumball. Some boxes were filled with spritz heart cookies as well. We had so much fun making them, we worked in a production line fashion. This was from last year. This year, we need to come up with something similar to place those yummy Lindt Chocolates into. That post will be coming soon.

A few more of the boxes finished.

Materials:

  • Valentine-themed scrapbook paper

Paper Pumpkin :: Tutorial

This fall make a three-dimensional pumpkin from paper for fun and decor.

Create one or a few of this easy paper pumpkin this fall. You can cut out the necessary pieces on your personal paper cutter or by hand. They aren’t that detailed.

materials

Materials needed:

  • Orange cardstock
  • Green cardstock
  • Mini Glue Dots
  • Bone folder
  • Marker with cap
  • Personal cutting machine and free SVG file or template and scissors

This is the cutting template. You can print out the image, draw your own, or download this free SVG file. [SVG file]

opposite strips
Begin by lifting and gluing opposite strips together.

lifting strips
I chose to work in a random order of pairs, you can do this or work your way around the pumpkin in order.

leaf
This step is optional, I decided to add a bit of dimension to the leaf by drawing in veins with a bone folder and then bending the leaf to be more realistic.

attach leaf
Attach the leaf to the top of the pumpkin using a Glue Dot.

pen technique
Here is a trick for rolling the paper vine. I used a marker and put the end of the paper strip under the cap, then rolled the paper around the pen.

rolling paper
Once you are happy with the vine, remove it from the pen. I chose to roll it tighter once removed and just did it by hand.

finished
I folded the vine and attached it under the leaf with a final Glue Dot.
