DIY a Dragonfly Pin

Make an adorable dragonfly pin with Denise Boddey Designs. @deniseboddeydesigns #sponsored @DecoArtAcrylicPaints

Follow along as I make this adorable Dragonfly Pin using a chipboard design piece from Denise Boddey Designs. This post is created as a part of the design team and some materials have been provided to use in this post. You can make your pin in different colors if you wish. Make one match a special outfit or for a special occasion. The Dragonfly Pin would also make a great gift or an embellishment for a card or mixed media project.

white paint

Since the chipboard is dark, I used white chalk paint to coat the dragonfly. I found it needed two coats to fully cover the piece. Now the colors will show up better.

paint colors

I used a variety of paint colors and applied them in a dabbing motion. You can see what I mean in the video tutorial below.

glittered

To enhance the wings, I painted the entire dragonfly with White Enchanted Shimmer and while still wet, I applied chunky glitter to the wings.

resin

To finish off the dragonfly, I used UV resin to seal the piece. If you don’t have UV resin you could use a variety of different sealers. Spray varnish coating or Diamond Glaze would work as alternatives.

Layered Artwork with Denise Boddey

Make a layered artwork using materials from Denise Boddey Designs. #sponsored #designteam @DecoArtAcrylicPaints @ScrapbookAdhesives

Today I am posting as a part of the Denise Boddey Design Team. I am working with cut chipboard and a card topper. Painting and layering the elements make for a beautiful work of art. Framing mine, I used a frame from the dollar store that I did a patina finish on to coordinate the colors.

Materials:

  • Card topper (In my Garden Patch)
  • Chipboard (Arch Window)
  • detail scissors
  • Americana Chalk Finish (lace)
  • tape runner
  • glue
  • picture frame
  • Metal Effects patina kit
  • foam brush

Follow along with the video tutorial:

I originally thought I was going to make a card, but as the pieces came together I knew it would work better as a framed piece of artwork. I am really pleased with the end results. What do you think is best, as a card or framed art?

Looking at these Sprouts Panels from Denise Boddey Designs, I thought they would work well sandwiched together. Then I needed to decide what to put between them. Could I make faux stained glass with alcohol ink? Why not give it a try!

Materials:

  • Sprouts Panels
  • white acrylic paint
  • paintbrush
  • laminate and laminator
  • alcohol ink
  • dust cleaner
  • adhesive
  • twine
  • scissors
  • knife blade
  • Kamar Varnish
  • Clear Glaze

Special thanks to Denise Boddey Designs and ScraPerfect for providing some of the materials that are used in this project. I am a design team member with both companies.

Using a laminator and a laminate sheet, send it through by its self. Then set it aside. This is the plastic sheet that will be used as faux stained glass.

Video Tutorial:

Here is a close-up of the finished project. I love how the colors blend together and show through the chipboard piece. Because the chipboard is laser cut, they align perfectly.

The whole finished piece with light shining through. I can’t wait to hang this in a window. I think it turned out so nice.

Hello Sign with Denise Boddey

Follow along with my as I design a plaque inspired by a mood board.

This month as part of the Denise Boddey design team we were challenged to work with a mood board. I have seen mood boards before but I have never worked using one as inspiration for a design.

mood board

The above mood board is what we were provided, aren’t the colors beautiful! You can see that I worked more with the three colors on the left side, the second image down from the top. These were colors of items I already had on hand.

Materials:

  • wood plaque
  • mod podge
  • Denise Boddey card topper
  • Prima flowers
  • diy flowers
  • Cricut Maker
  • cardstock
  • fabri-tac
  • silk ribbon
  • Denise Boddey foliage chipboard
  • foam brush
  • craft knife

Optional:

  • Embelli gelli
  • tweezers

Directions:

Cricut Maker

To begin I used my Cricut Maker to cut out the word hello three times from blue cardstock. The reason for three times was to add some height to the word when placed on the plaque. Once cut out, I glued the three layers together.

Fall Pumpkin Plaque Decor

A fun festive and a bit scary decor plaque made with Denise Boddey Designs.

This mixed media fall decor plaque was quick and easy to make. It has a little glam and a little bit of scary. Follow along with the tutorial to see what I mean. Special thanks to Denise Boddey Designs for providing the pumpkin cut out for this piece. As a part of the Denise Boddey design team, this is my October project.

Materials:

  • yellow tissue paper
  • foam dots
  • wooden plaque
  • pumpkin cut out
  • paintbrush
  • fall leaves
  • ribbon bows
  • matte Mod Podge
  • white chalk paint
  • salmon paint
  • heat gun (optional)

Directions:

I began by using the chalk paint and doing a stain or whitewash technique on the plaque so the grain would show through.
To apply the paint, I wiped it on with a dry baby wipe.

Setting the plaque aside to dry, I painted the pumpkin with salmon-colored paint.

Once those were dry, I decided upon the arrangement, and then began to Mod Podge everything in place.

I used a heat gun to speed up the drying process.
The leaves didn’t want to stick down but as the Mod Podge dried and I tapped on the leaves, they flattened and stuck.
The wood plaque showed where the Mod Podge was even though it was matte, so I covered the entire plaque.

Using a piece of wrinkled yellow tissue paper, I Mod Podged it to the back of the pumpkin.

Using a bit of Fabri-tac, I placed the bows on the top of the plaque.

To adhere the pumpkin to the plaque, I wanted it raised so I used a stack of two pop dots.

Once the plaque was done, I had another thought. What about having the face of the pumpkin glow in the dark!
I painted the tissue to glow in the dark. I really wish I had thought of this earlier, it would have been easier to do!

Glow in the dark is hard to photograph but I think you can get the gist of it here.
This added the scary feature to the plaque that isn’t really expected in the light.

Here is a quick tip for hanging.
Use a soda can tab as the hanger, just glue it to the back of the plaque.

And it is finished and ready to hang for fall!
