This abstract art piece from Birdz of a Feather caught my eye. It is created with laser-cut felt pieces which could also be done on a personal cutting machine.

DIY Ribbon Fish

with Gwen Studios

final fish

Using carboard and ribbons, you can make this fun colorful fish for Father’s Day. Whether Dad is a fisherman or not, he will get a kick out of this colorful fish that the kids can help make.

template and box

Grab the free PDF template below. I used it to cut out cardboard from a cereal box.

Free PDF file [fish template]

fish cut and paint

After cutting the cardboard, I used DecoArt’s DecoEarth paints on the fish. I applied the paint with a brush and then smooshed it to blend with a makeup sponge.

This project was created for Gwen Studios. You can find all the design team projects listed on the Designer Crafts Connection website. Gwen Studios products can be found at Walmart and Michaels.

painted

Paint the head, the tail, and the fins. This would be a fun job for the littlest crafter to help with.

ribbons

I cut a variety of colored Gwen Studios ribbons around 3″ in length. I used satin ribbons that were 3/8″ wide.

fold

Using a hot glue gun, I folded the ribbons to a point. You can do this while the paint is drying on the fish.

first row of ribbons

Start at the tail end of the fish and add the folded ribbons as shown above. I used hot glue to quickly put them in place.

ribbons all in place

Randomly choose the colors of ribbon and continue to place the folded ribbons onto the fish. Once you are past the fins, you will not need any more ribbons.

folded ribbons

This is a close-up of the folded ribbons all glued in place. You can see how the points of the ribbons are staggered. Then glue the head onto the fish’s body, it is slightly bigger. If you align the sides, the head part will curve up and over the ribbons.

I used a round resin piece I had for the eye. I think a googly eye would work well.
