Making a Paper Ornament

Make a paper ornament with a free SVG file and cardstock from CutCardStock.

with CutCardStock

finished ornament

It is so fun to craft for the holidays. This ornament is a beautiful addition to your tree but would also make a great hostess gift for those holiday parties you are invited to attend. You could stylize the surface design to suit the receiver.

I created this free SVG file to share with you as a part of the CutCardStock design team. I love creating SVG files, and I will be sharing projects, including SVG files, with you twice a month.

card stock

The card stock used for the ornament is Bonsai and is weighted at 80# cover. CutCardStock has a ton of different colors to choose from.

finished texture

I chose to create a visual texture on the surface of the cardstock. I began by stamping, then color smooshing, and finally ended by spraying with DIY shimmer spray.

Make sure the cardstock is completely dry before cutting. Set the red line to score, and the black shape to cut.

I cut nine ornament shapes from the 8.5″ x 11″ page. Each piece then got folded in half along the score line.

The pieces were glued together with twine added for hanging. A pearl bead was added to the top and a DIY tassel to the bottom for embellishment.

Origami Ornament

Make a Christmas ornament using origami paper.

with Yasutomo Origami Papers

There are many creative ways to make ornaments. You can use paint, alcohol ink, or fabric. Why not use origami paper? I cut mine into squares but tearing the paper would also make a beautiful ornament. I am working with papers from Yatsutomo. The ornament is plastic but this technique will also work on glass.

Many of the items I use in posts are provided by the manufacturers to promote their products.

  • ribbon
  • foam paintbrush
  • Scotch tacky glue

The iridescent paper didn’t want to stay put. I found overlapping it with the other patterned papers helped to hold it in place. After covering the ornament with origami paper, I used a color-coordinating ribbon to finish off the look.

Materials:

  • scissors
  • cardstock
  • Zyron sticker maker
  • Ribbons from Gwen Studios
  • clear ornament
  • Christmas medallion

This Christmas Tree ribbon is amazing, I have never seen anything like it. Gwen Studios has a variety of different patterns of die-cut ribbon available. It is cut really well but because of the small pieces, you may need to remove some from the design to gain the full effect.

Check out the display of Gwen Studios die-cut ribbons at Walmart. There are trees, snowflakes, gingerbread men, ornaments, deer, and more.

I ran both the tree and red ribbon through a Zyron sticker maker and stacked them together before I wrapped my ornament with them. Now I am adding the double bow and Christmas medallion to the ornament with a bit of Fabri-Tac glue.

Don’t forget to fill the ornament and attach the gift tag that coordinates. I filled mine with candies but bath salts or hot cocoa would be nice as well. Just personalize the filling to your recipient.

Christmas in July – Recycled Ornament

With the temperature outside reaching close to 100 degrees, it is really hard to be creative with a Christmas theme. But, for Christmas in July, a blog hop with the Creative Crafters, I made a recycled Christmas Ornament. The ornament is made from pull tabs from soda cans.

Materials:

  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • pull tabs
  • beads
  • thread
  • needle

Directions:

I have to apologize, I was so busy trying to figure this out, I didn’t take photos. I will try to walk you through the steps with my words.

To begin, I drew a circle on a scrap piece of paper. Then I laid out the soda tabs around the circle (as pictured above).

Using hot glue, I glued the second layer of soda tabs onto the original circle. This time I staggered their placement.

Next, I threaded an embroidery needle with a green cord. I sewed it in and out around the soda tabs.

In the second round of sewing, I added a bead. Then I joined the cord and made a loop for hanging.

The hot glue doesn’t fully hold the soda tabs long-term. This is why I added the cord.

Having finished, I would have liked to have red beads in the right size for this project. I would also like to add some ribbon or a floral pik, center top.

Check out the other projects made for this Christmas in July blog hop. After the 17th, feel free to add your own Christmas in July project to the hop. The link-up will be open until the 22nd.

Winter Hat Christmas Ornament

Fun hat ornaments made from toilet paper rolls and yarn. Learn how to make your own.

These cute Winter Hat Ornaments are easy to make. They only take a few items that you probably already have at home and they are easy enough to make with children. Use one kind of yarn or a variety to create a striped hat. The options are really endless by using a variety of different yarns. This is a great craft to use up leftover project yarn.

materials

Materials:

  • yarn
  • scissors
  • tissue
  • toilet paper roll

Instructions:

toilet paper tube
Cut a 1/4 to 1/2 inch loop from the toilet paper roll.

cut yarn
Cut lengths of yarn about 10″ long. I wrap around my thumb and pinkie fingers and then cut on of the loops.

loop through
Fold one piece of yarn in half.
Place the loop through the tube.

ends through
Put the ends of the yarn through the loop.

pull tight
Pull the ends tight.

full tube
Continue to do so until the tube is full of yarn.

tie
Using one more strand of yarn, collect all the yarn ends and tie a double knot, very tightly.

stuff tissue
Stuff a balled-up tissue into the hat to fill out the shape.

trim
Trim the top “poof” of the hat and play with it to get the desired fullness.

Enjoy!

Options:

  • You can use different colors of yarn to create a striped pattern if you desire.
  • Different yarns will create a different look, acrylic versus wool, etc…
  • You can use another piece of yarn to hang your ornament or insert a wire hanger into the top of the hat.
  • Instead of an ornament, use the hat to top off a bottle of wine.
  • Decorate a present using the hat like you would a bow.
