Floral Ribbon Embroidery

Learn to embroider with ribbon from Gwen Studios.

Ribbon Embroidery is a beautiful craft, but using silk ribbons is expensive. If you are starting out or practicing, sheer ribbon can be a great alternative. I used sheer ribbon from Gwen Studio for this floral piece. I even colored white ribbon green which allowed me to make ribbon whatever color I needed. That in itself is a great cost-saving.

Your local Walmart stores carry Gwen Studios products. I am on the Gwen Studios design team where I am provided ribbon to work with each month.

The Process:

I first embroidered the roses with the red ribbon. My original plan was to use green satin ribbon for the greenery but it presented too thick for my fabric.

The white sheer ribbon is made green by applying Marabu Fashion Spray (see how it was done in the video tutorial below). This worked really well. Now I have a way to create a variety of different colored ribbons as needed. I can buy a white ribbon and make it any color with paint or dye. And it was fun to be a little messy!

After making the ribbon green, I embroidered the leaves and stems. I just need to add pink buds to the stems on either side of the arrangement.

There are a few different ways to finish off embroidery work. I chose to do a running stitch around the embroidery hoop to gather the excess fabric on the back of the hoop.

Notice the modeling of the fabric? In person it is less noticable. There’s something with how the fabric was made and the lighting created really interesting modeling effects on the surface in photography and video.

To hide everything, I cover the back with felt. Adhesive-backed felt made it easy to draw around the embroidery hoop onto the paper backing. Then I cut inside my pencil line, peel away the paper, and stick the felt in place. As a final step, I chose to secure the tightening mechanism at the top of the hoop with a bit of super glue so it will not come undone.

Bunny Treat Box and SVG

Make a bunny treat box for Easter with this free SVG file.

With Easter right around the corner, why not make this cute bunny box. What a cute way to give a treat. Both young and old will get a kick out of it. You can make them in different sizes and colors. Personalize them and they make a great place setting name tag.

I used Stardream Metallic Card Stock in Crystal for the box and Astrobright in Pulsar Pink for the ears and nose. CutCardStock’s Stardream line is one of my favorite card stocks with a bit of metallic, it has a great look.

I cut the SVG file out on a Cricut Maker. Placing two different pieces of card stock on the mat, I adjusted the file in Design Space. This made it easier to cut once instead of twice.

As a reminder when cutting, set the red lines to score and load your scoring tool before setting the file to cut. The materials are minimal for this project making it so easy to make. It would be fun to get the kids involved.

I cut the whisker with scissors from a scrap of black and chose to draw in the eyes instead of cutting them out.

Aluminum Foil in the Craft Room

Emboss aluminum foil as an alternative craft material.

I love finding alternative and inexpensive ways to craft. Today I am working with aluminum foil and embossing. The metallic shine is so pretty. After embossing the foil, I added alcohol ink to the surface. The ink really adds to the dimension and shows off the embossing.

There are a lot of uses for aluminum foil so I keep a roll in my craft room. Probably no surprise, I also keep a roll of parchment paper. I hadn’t used foil in a while and I wanted to emboss it. After doing so, it seemed appropriate to add the alcohol ink, they go together so well.

It is fun to just craft with your materials with no end product in mind. This was the case today. I knew I wanted to use the aluminum foil and emboss it, but that just wasn’t enough so I added the ink. Now I have this beautiful piece that will be used sometime soon. Maybe it will end up as a card background, or cut into a shape. It could be used in a mixed media piece. Maybe it will inspire more creative exploration using foil. Sometimes creating isn’t about the end result but the process, I am OK with that. I had fun with the process.

DIY a Gift Bag

Learn how to diy a gift bag from wrapping paper.

Have you ever made your own gift bag? It really isn’t difficult. I made this one from wrapping paper. It was actually so easy that I am not sure I will buy gift bags again. I can make them in whatever size I need. The cost savings is another advantage.

The materials needed are very limited. You will need a pair of scissors, double-sided tape, and of course wrapping paper. Depending upon how you embellish it, you will want those materials as well. I used a paper punch and twine. On another version, I folded over the top and used a sticker – so easy.

Follow the easy video tutorial above to make your own gift bag. You can make them as you need or prepare a bunch ahead of time for when you need them. A fun idea would be to choose a certain paper pattern per person for a holiday like Christmas. No name tags would be needed, just let them know their pattern on the special day.
