Etching a Berry Jar

This glass jar is etched with etchall creme and then decorated with Glaze pens and Gwen Studios ribbon. I bought the jar as a hanging jar from the Dollar Tree. I planned to etch it and add an electric candle (as seen). Upon completion, I think it would look nice filled with candy or round balls of white soap for the bath. (I wish I had some)

Before working with the jar, remove the label and clean the glass with rubbing alcohol. If you don’t have any rubbing alcohol you can substitute hand sanitizer.

I measured around the jar and designed the holly berry design to wrap around the jar. Weed away the design you want to etch and leave enough vinyl to protect the glass.

After the vinyl is applied and rubbed down well with no air bubbles, apply the etchall creme. It takes 15 minutes to etch the glass. Then remove the etchall creme putting it back into the container.

The next step is to wash the glass and remove the vinyl. I do so by using a baby wipe to clean the glass, remove the vinyl, and finish off by cleaning again with rubbing alcohol.

I have recently been experimenting with different ways to color my glass etching. For this project, I am using Glaze 3D glossy pens in red and green. Glaze pens work on glass and you don’t need to etch the glass however I think the pens add to the etching.

The mark made by the pens is small. I chose to color the berries in solid and add a stylized line art to the leaves. The Glaze pens leave a glossy raised surface on the glass.

This is a fun inside view of the finished jar. I like how the colors are seen on the inside and outside of the jar.

Gold Foil Tag – Tag it Tuesday

Today I am sharing a Gold Foil technique for Tag it Tuesday. I like the rustic application of the gold foil that coordinates with the pattern on the small envelope. Inside the envelope is a small card that has a sentiment and a butterfly sticker.

How to make a Book Edge Clip

The Book Edge Clips work well on your junk journals to hold elements that you want to tuck into the page. Or how about a bookmark in your books and Bibles? Or use them to clip together a grouping of papers.

After downloading the file and unzipping it. Choose which design to print. Then you will need three paper clips and some tacky adhesive. I also used a paper trimmer, a pair of scissors, and a corner rounder.

Alcohol Ink Switch Plate

Alcohol ink works on many different non-porous surfaces. Grab a simple plastic switch plate for the hardware store that costs practically nothing and turn it into a unique work of art with this plastic wrap technique.

To begin, place a large area of plastic wrap on your work surface. The switch plate will come with two screws. I used washi tape on the back to hold them in place. This allows the screws to be colored to match the switch plate.

For this project, I used alcohol Inks from Marabu.

After applying a generous amount of different colors of alcohol ink on the switch plate, cover it with the plastic wrap and smoosh the plastic to gain your desired design.

It is ready to unwrap after letting the piece dry for a day. Notice how different the design and colors look after drying. Then all that needs to be done is a simple coat of UV protection and then the switch plate is ready to use.

For a final coating, I use Krylon Clear Coat or Krylon Kamar Varnish.

Here is a close-up look at the surface and a screw that is also colored. If you don’t like the results you can continue to add alcohol ink to change the design, or clean it off with rubbing alcohol and start over.

Tag it Tuesday – Shimmer Tag

Today’s tag uses shimmer powders. They are so fun and unpredictable. This Shimmer tag might be my favorite tag so far in the series. The color is randomly created by using Nuvo Shimmer Powders.

I began by stamping an image and heat embossing it. Then I applied the shimmer powders. And then finally adding a die-cut sentiment. See how fun it was to create in the video tutorial.

Ribbon Ornament or Decor

Gwen Studio’s ribbons make for such a colorful ornament. While this is my version, there are a lot of options you can choose when making your ribbon ornament. Consider a limited color palette, different lengths of ribbons, and different thicknesses of ribbons.

Not only does this make an ornament, but you can use it all year round as a home decor piece. I think it would look nice hanging in a doorway or as a part of a larger shelf or table display.
