Making a Paper Owl Mask

Make your own owl mask with the free SVG file.

with CutCardStock

owl mask

What a fun time of the year to create. As the summer weather turns cooler the colors change to an autumn palette. This DIY mask can be worn for Halloween or made as a decorative piece to hang. If you change the color or eliminate some of the pieces you can totally change the look and feel of the mask. Create in all white and you’d have a beautiful winter owl.

The free SVG file was created as a part of the CutCardStock design team and is linked below.

basis papers

I chose the colors from the Basis line, weighted at 80# cover, and come in a variety of different colors.

Cricut Maker

Cutting this file on a Cricut Maker, I set it to cut 100# cardstock.

cut parts

All the pieces are cut and ready to assemble. I set the width of the file to 7.5″ to fit comfortably on the 8.5 x 11″ pieces.

inks and mask

I wanted to add some detail and depth to the mask so I chose to ink blend the pieces with Distress Oxide. Then I worked the pieces with a ball tool to add some actual dimension.

close-up

From this angle, you can see the dimension and a close-up of some of the ink blending. Adding a bit of elastic is all that is needed in order to wear the mask.

A perfect fit!

Ribbon Flower Enhanced Round Box

Make a round box with a ribbon flower accent.

with Gwen Studios

finished box

A handmade round box with a ribbon flower topper made with ribbon from Gwen Studios. The round box represents a pumpkin. I originally was collaging a napkin onto a pumpkin with the intent to add the flower near the stem. The pumpkin turned out nice but it was too busy to show off the ribbon flower.

ribbon

Gwen Studios ribbon is available at Walmart and Michaels. For this project, I used Green and Orange satin ribbons in 7/8th inch.

cricut Maker
Cricut Maker

I cut the round box on my Cricut Maker using two pieces of Solar Yellow cardstock from CutCardStock. The free box SVG file is available in the shop. [round box]

ink blending

Before putting the box together, I used Distress Oxide in Spiced Marmalade to add color and visual texture to the cardstock. Doing so was to help the round box have similarities to a pumpkin.

Putting the box together and making the ribbon flower and leaves are explained in the video tutorial below.

Video Tutorial:

open box

With the box open, you can better see the ribbon flower and leaves. The center of the flower is a button from an outfit my mom wore probably in the 70s.

Fall-themed Glass Dish

Take a Dollar Tree bowl and elevated it to something elegant with Etchall etching creme.

with Etchall

glass bowl

I had an idea to etch these detailed leaves onto a glass bowl from Dollar Tree using Etchall etching creme. After cutting the vinyl and attempting to weed away the leaf, I decided that plan wasn’t going to work, the centers of the leaves were too small and hard to keep in place. So I chose to etch the reverse of my idea. The result is stunning, actually even better than my original idea.

cricut maker

I used a Cricut Maker to cut the leaf design. The leaves were set to a small size – about 1.25″ long. I also cut a rectangle that would work with my original idea. I ended up using it for the seam around the bowl. You can grab the free leaf SVG from my store. [leaf SVG]

vinyl on bowl

I placed the leaves around the top of the bowl. They are placed tip to tip and tail to tail. I measured and drew lines on the inside of the bowl to guide where to place the straight line of vinyl on the outside. The rest of the bowl was covered with packing tape as a precaution.

etchall and bowl

See the video tutorial below for details on using Etchall on the bowl. This was also an exercise in testing how detailed the etching creme could handle. It really worked well.

close-up

Here is a close-up image of the finished piece backed in black so you can see the detail of the leaves and the etching. The result took a Dollar Tree bowl and really elevated it to something elegant, better than I expected!

Bookmaking

Tab bookbinding with a collaged cover.

with Collaged Cover

front of book

A few years ago I attended a bookbinding retreat at Penland. To this day, I still rely on the techniques I learned. This sweet little journal has a tab binding. The nice thing about a tab binding is that you can make the book as many pages as desired. I began making the cover papers using book pages and collaged them together.

paint

You might be surprised to learn that I used children’s tempera and liquid watercolor. Applying the paints in a similar fashion to working on a Gelli plate. After the first layer of paint, different paint was applied with a stencil. Finally, stamped images were added.

collage

After the paint dried, I cut the pages into different sizes. They were then used to collage onto chipboard for the covers. The entire process from painting pages to bookbinding is better viewed in the video tutorial.
