Back to School Bookmarks

DIY bookmarks with Gwen Studios ribbon.

with Gwen Studios

Now that it is time to head back to school, I am making a few versions of bookmarks using ribbons from Gwen Studios. These bookmarks would pair well with gifting a book as well. My family often gives what we call a moment gift consisting of a good book and a bag of M&Ms. I think we now need to add a handmade bookmark to the gift.

As a design team member for Gwen Studios, I was recently sent this great box full of ribbon samples. There are satin and grosgrain ribbons. It was fun choosing different widths and colors to work together for the bookmarks.

Gwen Studios ribbons can be found at Walmart and Michaels. To see all the back-to-school themed projects made with Gwen Studios ribbons, make sure to visit the Designer Crafts Connection website.

Ruffled Ribbon Bookmark

This first bookmark I am calling a ruffled bookmark because of the folded/ruffled green ribbon. The brown and burgundy ribbon had the ends melted with a lighter to keep them from raveling. All the layers were glued together using Fabri-Tac.

The central ribbon that appears to be ruffled was actually folded and glued. Each fold was glued twice – front and back. You could choose to sew instead of glue but I didn’t want a line of thread to show so I glued it.

Blue Fringe Bookmark

blue bookmark

The blue bookmark was similar in that it used three layers of ribbon. All the ends were sealed with a lighter so they don’t fray except the end of the blue ribbon. One end of the blue ribbon was fringed. To do this, the very thin edge of the ribbon needed to be cut away where the fringe is. This made making the fringe easy to do.

The blue ribbon bookmark was put together using double-sided tape. The glue will also work but might seep through the light-colored ribbon so tape was used instead as a precaution.

Magnetic Bookmark

This is a magnetic bookmark. It only uses one piece of ribbon.

stamping

I stamped the yellow ribbon with bees using Staz-on black ink in a random pattern.

paint magnets

To use magnets, I used a thin advertising magnet that is easily cut with scissors. Since the ribbon was light-colored, the ad showed through the ribbon so I painted the advertisement side with white paint.

glue magnets

Once the paint was dry, I glued the magnets to the back side of the ribbon leaving a very small space between the magnets. In hindsight, the double-sided tape might have worked better.

The excess ribbon was folded and glued to the magnets creating a nicely finished folded edge. Because the magnet I used wasn’t that strong, I left a small area of each magnet exposed. It would look a lot better to cover the entire magnet so using a strong magnet really would help.

Japanese Free Printable

Grab this free printable to try with your junk journaling, mixed media, and crafting.

I have been working on a few new sets of digital prints to use for junk journaling, mixed media, and crafting. I wanted to give you a free file to try before you spend any money on the other sets that are available in the shop. Download the file, print it out, and see how it works for you. I’d love to see and hear about your experience. The file has two pages. The first page is the collaged image above, the second page is a solid red and white Japanese wave pattern to print on the reverse side of the collage.

The Japanese symbol on the left is Love. You might also recognize, koi fish, bamboo, Japanese kimono fabric, Mt. Fujiyama, and cherry tree blossoms.

You can access the free download in the shop here [Japanese free printable]

Square Resin Earrings

Learn how quick and easy it is to make resin earrings with You-V jewelry gel resin.

with You-V Resin

finished earrings

These resin earrings are rather quick and very easy to make. I used You-V resin because of its quick drying time and safety features. Using a mold and a few inclusions and I have a new pair of earrings that work with a variety of different outfits.

materials

I used blue jewelry gel resin from You-V, an earring mold, a UV flashlight, and some glitter inclusions.

resin in mold

The resin and inclusions are in the mold. Blue jewelry gel resin is transparent and very light in color. In this image, you can see the randomness and similarities of the inclusions.

uv light

All the curing steps were done with a UV flashlight. The gel can be cured with a UV nail lamp as well. Because the resin cures quickly, it was easy to hold a flashlight for the time needed. A UV nail light will also work.

jewelry parts

Once the resin pieces were taken out of the mold and cleaned up, they were ready for the jewelry findings. I actually needed 2 more small jump rings that aren’t seen in this photo.

To see all the process steps and tips watch the complete video tutorial below.

Not all UV resin works the same way. You-V is rather special in that it cures quickly (30 seconds to a minute) and is SGS certified with solvent-free composition. Under regular handling, it has a low risk of skin irritation making it safe to use without protection as well as safe for kids to use.

Inspirational Button Pins

Making fun expressive button pins with free printables.

pins in hand

These inspirational pins were made with two free printables in the store. A few days ago I posted about making earrings using the marbled paper printable. That same printable is used here. What a fun way to express yourself. The pins also make fun little items to share.

printables

For this size of a pin, a 1″ paper punch made cutting the circle easy. Then an appropriate word was chosen and trimmed to fit within the circle. Of course, these printables can be used in various craft projects. These free printables are available through the links below.
