DIY Glitter and UV Pens

Learn how to make your own glitter coated pens using You-V resin.

final pens

Making glitter and UV pens is such a fun project. You can choose whatever color you like. All kinds of glitter can work, the finer the glitter the smoother the results. Using You-V resin makes the curing time quick as well as safe to touch.

How fun would it be to make these to coordinate with a special journal or project? They would also make a fun back-to-school project to do with the kids. While I only used glitter, you could include small stickers, cut vinyl, or images as well.

pen ready for resin

After applying the glitter, you want to make sure the glue is completely dry before applying resin. I used Blue UV Jewelry Gel resin to coordinate with the color of my glitter. It is safe to use. Jewelry Gels are SGS certified with solvent-free composition. Under regular handling, it has a low risk of skin irritation.

The pen in the tutorial is made with chunky glitter, I also made a pen using fine glitter to show the difference.

Black Cat Mobile

Let’s make a black cat mobile to decorate your home for Halloween. It is so cute you can really use it year round!

with Gwen Studios

black cat mobile

I can’t believe it is time to craft for Halloween! In this house we love cats and we aren’t afraid of black ones. In fact, we used to have a black cat. As a member of the Gwen Studios design team, I was asked to craft for Halloween or Fall. I chose to make this black cat mobile. While everything I used is black, it turned out rather cute and not scary at all!

Gwen Studios ribbons can be found at Walmart and Michaels. To see all the projects made with Gwen Studios ribbons, make sure to visit the Designer Crafts Connection website.

paint materials

Materials:

comparison of painted cats

At first, I thought all I needed was to paint the cats black – which I did. I painted them front and back and made sure to cover the edges as well. Then I decided to try the Dragonfly Glaze Paint on top of the black paint and that really finished off the look taking the flat black surface to something magical! I painted the embroidery hoop exactly the same way.

cats and bows

While the painting of the cats dried, I tied eight small bows from the Gwen Studios black satin ribbon. I used a lighter to finish off the ends of each bow so the ribbon doesn’t fray.

top knot

To begin the construction of the mobile, I took four very long strands of the black satin ribbon, folded them in half, and tied a knot leaving a loop at the top for hanging. At the very top of the loop where the ribbons are layered on top of each other, I used the Quick Grip glue between each layer to keep the ribbons in place.

knots on hoop

Evenly separating the ribbon strands around the embroidery hoop, I tied and knotted, and balanced the hoop. Once I was happy with the arrangement, I secured each knot to the hoop using the Quick Grip glue.

single cat

Each ribbon strand has a cat and bow attached at random lengths. I altered the direction each cat is facing. Looping the ribbon through the hole in the cat and tied a knot. Before making the knot tight, I slipped a bow into the knot loop. To finish off the ribbon, I cut the excess ribbon off, used a lighter to seal the end, and then glued the ribbon tail up onto the long strand of ribbon.

close up of cats on the mobile

Here is a close-up of the finished mobile cats. You can see how the cats are staggered in different lengths. When they touch each other the wood gives off a clicking sound that is subtle and pleasant.

Make a Wreath Card

Make a wreath card in a variety of different ways with this one free SVG file.

with CutCardStock

wreath card

Cutcardstock’s featured theme this month is white and ivory. This month I created an SVG file that is more of a kit than one item. The file has a variety of different flora pieces that can be put together in a variety of different ways. You can use the card without any of the additional elements added. I chose to color the flower and leaves for the card I made.

Basic White card stock

The soft white color, matte vellum finish, and medium weight of this Basic White card stock cuts really well in electronic cutting machines.

cricut maker

I used a Cricut Maker with a 100lb card stock setting and a pressure setting of more. I wanted to make sure the small detailed pieces were cut thoroughly.

There are multiple pieces in the file. The card has a cut-away circle with a woven center. The flora pieces can be added in a variety of different arrangements, or not at all, making this file very flexible for crafting.

Here are the pieces I chose to work with from the file. Using Distress Oxide ink, I blended the ink onto the cut pieces with a brush.

This close-up shows the detail and the dimension of the card.
You also get a nice look at the yellow gem in the flower’s center.

Video Tutorial:

I really like how the light is showing through the woven circle. It would also look nice with a colored inset inside.

How to Etch and Color Glass

Learn how easy it is to etch and color glass with etchall etching creme.

with etchall

final colored jar

This is such a cute and playfully colored jar that is very practical to use. I placed tissues inside so you can see the different colors applied to the etched flowers. This project is very easy to do with minimal tools needed. I used a paper punch to create the flower shapes and etchall etching creme for etching.

The links provided are for your use and may contain affiliate links.
They cost nothing for you to use.
Thank you in advance for supporting this site with its use.

materials

I started with the glass jar and decided on a design. Then, I used hand sanitizer to clean the surface of the jar because my bottle of rubbing alcohol was empty. So, in a pinch, hand sanitizer works to clean your glass. A paper punch easily creates flower shapes from the vinyl and gets applied around the entire jar. After the etching process was finished, the flowers were colored.

jar with vinyl

This photo shows the jar covered in vinyl flowers and etchall creme. It only takes 15 minutes for the etching process to work.

etched jar

The jar pictured above is shown after being etched and cleaned. The design is really sweet and I could be satisfied with the project right now but my original idea was to add color.

The video tutorial below will walk you through the entire process. If you have never tried etching glass, I think the video would be a great way for you to better understand the entire process.

Video Tutorial:

jar with blue

Here is the finished jar in metallic blue. I used metallic wax paste in the color Bora Bora by Zuri. The flowers remind me of clouds in this version.

close up

I actually removed the variety of colors and switched to a buffing wax. In the close-up image, you can see the metallic quality of the wax. While the color in the photos shows up well, in person I was a bit frustrated by what appeared to me to be light and not as dramatic as I wanted.

I was probably just too close to the project and should have left well enough alone. The multi-colored version seems more whimsical to me while the metallic cloud version seems more sophisticated. Let me know which version you like best in the comments below.

DIY a Paper Bowl

Make a paper bowl catchall from a free SVG.

with CutCardStock

Cutcardstock’s featured theme this month is white and ivory. Anytime I can create with the Stardream line, I jump at the chance. It is my favorite cardstock, the shine is just beautiful. This month I created an SVG file to make a DIY paper bowl.

quartz stardream

To make the paper bowl I used Quartz Stardream in 8.5 x 11″.

cricut maker

Cutting this file on a Cricut Maker, I set it to cut 100# cardstock with a pressure setting of more.

cut pieces

Here are the cut and scored shapes from the free SVG file. The file will make for a small container about 3″ wide when cut from an 8.5 x 11″ sheet.

painted cardstock

I used a smush technique to paint one side of the cardstock with metallic paint from Deco Art. Paint and water were placed on my glass mat and the cardstock was then smushed into the colors. It made a fantastic dendrite pattern.
