How to Make a Textured Card

How to make a layered and textured card with DIY texture paste.

final enjoy card

The other day I shared about making your own texture paste. What I didn’t share was what to do next, so here is one example of its use. The background leaves are all made with my homemade texture paste.

The links provided are for your use and may contain affiliate links.
They cost nothing for you to use.

card parts

This card has a few layers and textures. The card base is layered with a beautiful metallic Kunzite cardstock from CutCardStock. The next layer is the leaves made with DIY texture paste. Because of the slight depth from the texture paste, I thought the sentiment would need to be elevated from the front of the card.

layering word

The word enjoy was cut from white cardstock three times and once from Rinea foiled paper. I then layered them all together to give the word additional height. If you are interested in Rinea foiled paper use my discount code of “TRYIT” for 10% off your order.

Finally, a close-up of the card front so you can see the layers and depth of all the parts used. If you look closely, you can see I used a gem to dot the j instead of the layered cardstock, adding one additional texture to the card.

Make Your Own Texture Paste

Learn how to make your own cost effective texture paste for crafting.

texture paste

Buying art and craft supplies can be very expensive. It is nice when you can find alternatives that can save money. I have experimented with a few different coloring options to make my own texture paste.

materials

The basic necessary product for this process is spackling paste. I bought mine at the Dollar Tree making it very cost-effective. For each example, I added a drop of Acrylic Medium to make it spread better. I found that the color can be added from a variety of different materials. Acrylic paint, alcohol ink, and reinkers all added color and work similarly to each other.

The full process of testing can be seen in the video tutorial below.

final card

I have another pretty card that could be used for a wedding, an anniversary, or just a special greeting. You can add your own sentiment or leave it as is. There are options for adding 3 dimensions to this card by lifting up some of the cutting. I have also added gems to finish the card off.

The paper I used was Basis White Card Stock for the card. Basis White is so versatile. I love it for the foundation of most of my card making. It cuts and scores beautifully.

cricut maker

At 80#, I choose to set my Cricut Maker at a card stock setting of 100# which works well even for small detailed cuts. Don’t forget to set the red line to score before sending the file to cut.

The addition of the gems to the centers isn’t necessary but a nice option. If you don’t want to use your personal cutter for the smaller square piece, I cut mine on a paper trimmer to 3″ x 3″. The finished card is 4″ x 6″.

Please visit the store to download the free SVG file for the card. Window Card SVG

close-up of lifting

This view shows the detail of the 3-D effect of the lifting on the front of the card. I like the dimension gained as well as the see-through element of the cut-away pieces.

Watercolor Card

How to paint with watercolor pencils.

with Yasutomo

final card

My favorite gold watercolor is Reddish Gold Japanese Watercolor from Yasutomo. So I was excited to see Yasutomo at the Namta/Creativation trade show. I was given a set of watercolor pencils, they aren’t even released yet. So I tried them out and made a thank you note to send to them.

Some items used in this tutorial were provided by the manufacturer in order to promote their products.

watercolor pencils

When I got home a tried the pencils and painted a flower. The pencils are really nice and creamy.

flower painting

I really like how the pencils; when water is added, have a result that looks like watercolor paints. But the pencils are so versatile with the ability to add details. You can see the watercolor blending in the flower petals and the detail in the center of the flower.

I chose to use the flower image on a card and of course, I had to use my favorite gold watercolor. The base of the card has a napkin applied with Nori paste, when dry, I used the gold watercolor to bring out the texture. The textured cardstock also has the gold watercolor applied. The belly band made of vellum has a sentiment in gold embossing powder to connect it all together.

Painting a Postcard

Painting a postcard with edding paint liners.

with Edding

postcard

I love the color combination of pink and black. This postcard uses them in a few unique ways to create a whimsical look. The paint was from Edding paint markers. The silver is so metallic even when watered down. I used the paint directly from the pen, with a brush, and splattered it.

edding products

At a recent trade show, I was given samples from edding including a postcard pack and two paint pens (edding 5400 acrylic 3D double liner). The paint pens have two ends, one small and one larger. They aren’t a marker tip or a brush but an opening that you can squeeze paint through. Either end of the marker disburses paint contained in the center of the paint pen.

stamping

After painting, I stamped an image over the watered-down painted center of the card. I chose to use a stamping platform because I wanted to gain a rich black stamped image. Stamping the image twice got the desired result.

See how nice the pink (classy mauve) and black work together. The postcard; with the pink paint and black stamping, is pretty and could be finished, I wanted to add the silver paint as well.
