How to Glass Etch a Lucky Shamrock Mug

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner so you might want to make this Lucky Shamrock Mug now to get ready. Why is it lucky? Because there is one four-leaf shamrock among all the three-leaf ones. So just like in nature, there is luck in finding it! Can you spot it? And of course, the design is on a beer mug. Don’t you drink green beer on St. Patrick’s Day?

I want to thank Cricut and Etchall for providing materials used in this post.

Materials:

Directions:

Download the free SVG file and size it to your mug. If using the mug from the Dollar Tree, I found 10″ wide for the design to work well. I didn’t use one of the shamrocks. Make sure to clean the surface of the mug with rubbing alcohol.

Cut the vinyl on your cutting machine.

Weed away the design and keep the strip of vinyl

Wrap it around the mug in your desired location.
I liked the top rim of the mug for my design. I found wrapping around the mug to be a bit more difficult to get straight than I anticipated.
Remove any air bubbles and rub the vinyl down really well.

Cover the design with Etchall cream using your paintbrush and allow it to sit for 15 minutes.

Remove any excess cream and put it back in the jar. Then wash the mug in warm water, you can also use soap.

Remove the vinyl and discard it. Now the mug is ready to use and enjoy!

How to Safely Cast a Resin Mold

I recently saw another YouTuber using this Oomoo 30 compound to make a mold and I just had to give it a go. It is a two-part mix. I decided my first mold would be of a few buttons and then I tried rubber stamps. What can you use silicone molds for? Well, many things. You can cast resin, clay, wax, soap, or plaster. However, I did not see anything on the package that suggests it is food safe. So no candy making or cake decorating. I work with resin, soap, and polymer clay. Molds can get expensive so making my own was something I really wanted to try.

buttons covered in mold mixture

Since casting the buttons, I now think the way to do it would be to push the button into the Oomoo 30 instead of pouring it over the buttons. This would eliminate the problem with thickness due to the shank of the button. So that is what I am going to try next.

The second mold I tried was casting from rubber stamps and that turned out really well. I am happy with the results and will be doing more of these in the future.

The pink on the left (behind the actual button) is UV resin and the purple on the right is A + B resin. All the other pieces are UV resin.

How to DIY Alcohol Ink on a Mug

Crafting with Alcohol Ink has been around awhile. You might have even tried it. I saw someone doing this technique and knew I had to try it out. The variety comes from plastic wrap for the wrinkle technique. This was my first attempt using the wrap technique, and I am thrilled with the outcome. I wanted to be extra safe and I didn’t put any materials around the top part of the mug where your lips would come in contact.

Materials:

Directions:

Layout one layer of plastic wrap on your table surface.

circle

Center your mug on the plastic wrap and draw a circle around the bottom of the mug. Remove the mug and place another layer of plastic wrap on top.

tape

Off to the side, tape off the bottom of the mug if you don’t want the ink to get on it. (this is optional) Trim the tape to the size of the mug. Use the Rubbing Alcohol and paper towel, clean off the outside of the mug.

ink

Go around the circle in a random fashion with all the different colors of ink you desire. There is no need to waste ink on the bottom of the mug. This is why we took the time to draw the circle. I didn’t want the entire mug covered with ink so my circle of ink is rather thin.

setup

Place the mug in the center of your ink circle and then lift up the plastic wrap to cover the entire mug.

plastic wrap

Press the plastic wrap around the mug pushing the ink up the side of the mug. Make sure there is a tight contact all around the mug and that the plastic wrap will not come undone. Let it sit for 24 hours. Then unwrap the plastic wrap and discard it.

finished mug

If you are happy with the results spray a light coat of spray glaze over the entire outside of the mug. Wait for it to completely dry. Using the foam brush, paint a thin layer of the Mod Podge. Allow it to completely dry, at least 2 hours. Paint 3 total layers of Mod Podge.

Follow the directions on the Mod Podge and allow it to sit the required amount of time. When this is done, the mug will be top-rack dishwasher safe.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Coaster

I am not Irish but when I think of St. Patrick’s Day the first thing that comes to mind is green beer. I guess it is a throwback to my college days. So I created this Happy St. Partick’s Day coaster. The design is more like a seal so it could work well on other substrates like a t-shirt or a tote. The image is a free SVG file so you can download it and resize it however you’d like.
