Personalized Disney Magic Bands

June 3, 2015

Our recent visit to Disney World, we received a variety of Magic Bands. We had three different resort reservations, and received three sets of bands. It was a great opportunity to experiment with personalizing the bands. It also heightened the excitement around our house since my daughters joined in on the designing. The image above shows three different ways to decorate.

The above two bands use the same technique, we used nail polish. Of course you can get even more creative and use the nail polish on the entire band painting images, words or whatever you can imagine.

The band above is created by weaving ribbons around the band. The only tricky part to this design is making sure to skip over the middle of the band where the technology exists. In order for the Magic Band to work, you need to be able to place the Mickey image flat against the scanning machines.

The thing I love about this woven design is that it covers the plastic band which tends to make your skin sweat.

Consider using ribbon, yarn or embroidery thread, you can weave it or just wrap it around the band. Use a bit of super glue or hot glue to hold the ends in place on the back side of the band.

The final design uses vinyl. I measured the Mickey image on the center of the band and drew the image to use with my Cricut Explore. Cutting a variety of different colors, I randomly placed them over the entire band making sure to place a white Mickey on the actual area that scans so I could easily discern the correct area. While in the park, it was easy to say "scan the white Mickey".

You don't need a personal cutting machine to use this idea. You can cut your own vinyl with scissors, a paper punch design or use stickers as an alternative. If you do have a cutting machine, you can use the file I created for free. [SVG file]
